A short term mission trip to India is one of the most life-changing experiences a believer can have. Over 1,000 Americans have traveled to India through Global Hope India since 1998, and the overwhelming testimony is the same: "It changed my life." But what actually happens on a mission trip to India? Here is what you can expect from start to finish.
Before You Go: Preparation and Training
Every mission trip begins months before the plane takes off. Global Hope India provides pre-trip training that covers cultural awareness, spiritual preparation, team dynamics, and practical logistics. You will learn about the region you are visiting, the partners you will serve alongside, and the specific projects your team will support. Prayer is central to preparation — teams commit to praying for India’s unreached people long before they arrive.
On the Ground: Three Ways Teams Serve
Once in India, teams serve alongside one of our 12 indigenous church-planting partners located across North, South, East, and Northeast India. Service falls into three categories:
Leadership Development: Teams equip church planters, pastors, worship leaders, and core leaders with biblical truth and practical ministry resources. This might include teaching seminars, leading worship workshops, or mentoring young pastors.
Child Development: Teams serve children in schools, orphan homes, and local communities. This includes teaching, playing, distributing hygiene kits, and sharing the love of Christ with some of India’s most vulnerable children.
Community Development: Teams participate in clean water projects, business development initiatives, and other practical resources that transform villages. The goal is always to empower the local church to continue this work long after the team goes home.
The Relationships That Change Everything
The most powerful part of a mission trip to India is not the projects — it is the people. When you sit in a house church with Indian believers who are risking everything to follow Jesus, something shifts inside you. When you hold the hand of an orphan and pray over their life, your priorities are forever reordered. When you witness a pastor who walks miles every day to plant churches among unreached people, your understanding of faith deepens in ways no book or sermon can accomplish.
Coming Home: The Real Trip Begins
Every team member will tell you that the mission trip does not end when you board the plane home. The relationships you build, the faces you remember, and the faith you witness in India follow you for the rest of your life. Many team members return year after year. Others become monthly supporters of the partners they served alongside. Some are called into full-time missions.
